"On-line Introductions" Capture : Commercial Photography Magazine. July Aug 2002, Page 12 - 13.

Below are some of the images from my series on Kendo for Sotheby's exhibitions and online auction at Sotheby's head office and the Australian Consulate in New York on June / July 2002 at a special limited edition of 25 each. The exhibition showcases work from some of the leading Australian and New Zealand photographers. Different sizes are available and all work is archivally finished and personally signed.

"Photography From Australia and New Zealand"

Highlight Exhibition : June 10 - July 19 Sothebys, 1334 York Avenue, New York.

Main Exhibition : June 26 - July 19 Australian Consulate General , New York.

Kendo originates from kenjutsu practised by Japanese samurai dating back to the middle ages. The concept of Kendo is to discipline the human character through the principles of the sword. (shinai, ; bamboo sword).

Tournament bouts last for 5 minutes and it is the best of 3 points, a point is awarded when 2 of the 3 court judges show the same flag. Points are awarded for correct technique, posture, follow through, correct target area and a demonstration of spirit, (ki-ai ; the shout, the energy each individual puts into their attack on an opponent.). Contestants wear Kendo armour which has changed little since its inception around 400 years ago.

As a practitioner of Kendo I wanted to try to capture the ki-ai, the spirit of Kendo. So I photographed to try and encapsulate visually the speed, the anticipation, the graceful elegance, control, mediation and spiritual aspect of the oldest of the modern martial arts.

Photography to me is about a crystallisation of a particular place, feeling, event or idea in time. It's a subject simplified right down to its visual essence. It's a state of mindfulness that involves a bringing of attention to the now, coming to it empty with no preconceived ideas. I've always found left brain right brain approaches to creativity interesting and apply this through figurative and literal interpretations of the subject. One of the important things that photography is to me, is about space. The Japanese have a word for this space between things, "ma", so one of the things that I'm conscious of when I photograph is the space around things rather than the things themselves.
